SHEFFIELD CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

Sheffield Children's Hospital came to us to offer an opportunity to work with them alongside TITCH (Technology Innovation Transforming Child Health) and the Sheffield Hallam Research Centre. With the in-depth research and analysis of the current unmet needs within the paediatric sector the project began with a focus on Distraction Therapy. Distraction Therapy is used to help combat fear and anxiety in hospitals as well as encouraging play and growth for children during their time in hospital. Using research methods within hospital it was found that current Distraction Therapy solutions were falling short of what they were trying to achieve.

The design for this project aimed to provide a sensory and immersive distraction that would be used by Play Specialists to improve children's experience in hospital. Three Characters were designed to enable children to create stories. Each character had a different interaction and were aimed at a different sense. Using bubbles, music and aroma the toys are used to become a tool for a children's imagination. Alongside the bright colour palette of the toys this allows the characters to be used as distraction therapy for the Play Specialist with the transportable Carry Case.
